Types of Body Art

Body art is the art made on the human body. In other essence, any way of altering your body can be considered body art. Body art is one of the earliest and the most ancient forms of artistic expression known to humankind. Different types of body arts have been used to indicate religious devotion, status, decoration, protection against evil and diseases and much more.

Types of Body Art

The most common forms of body art are tattoos and body piercing, but other types include scarification, branding, scalpelling, shaping, and body painting.Here is a brief description about different types of body arts.

A tattoo is a permanent mark or design made on the body. It’ made by penetrating the skin with a needle and injecting ink into the area, usually creating some sort of design. Temporary tattoos don’t involve needles and stay for some days or weeks.

Body piercing
Body piercing is the act making hole or holes in the skin in order to wear jewellery.

Scarring is the art of creating specific wounds in the skin that leave raised marks when the wounds heal. It can be used to create patterns or textures on the skin. Ancient cultures used scarification as a rite of initiation into adulthood, and for some other reasons.

Body Painting
Unlike other forms of body art body painting is temporary in nature. It only lasts for some hours or days or weeks. Body paint can involve just the face or some body parts or it can be a full-body design.

Body shaping
Body shaping is a technique where you sculpt the body. This form of body art can get pretty extreme. Corseting the waistline, neck lengthening, and foot and head binding, have all had their heyday in certain cultures. The most well known method of body sculpturing is plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgery can change and define any part of the body.

There are more extreme examples of body shaping to be found. Some people have had body alterations to make they look like something totally other than human beings.
There are also some other forms of extreme body art such as mutilation and other things which is also seen.

In the recent times, the body art has become a subject of much broader discussions and treatments that cannot be just called as body art in a single definition.
