Tattoo after care

This age-old practice of body art is being upheld as a fashion icon what with movie, television and sports stars branding themselves with designs of their choice. While it is a very intricate job, it also demands a high level of after care, as outlined here:

  • When the tattoo is completed, control and direct the healing process till all the oozing from the tattoo stops by wiping the liquid away.
  • Prevent dead cells from accumulating, sticking and drying on the surface of the tattooed area as this extends the healing time, and brings forth a dry scab.
  • For less scabbing and quick healing, moisten the wound with ointment. This also retains more tattoo ink in the skin and heals brighter and sharper looking.
  • After your tattoo is complete, follow these instructions as soon as you get home:

    • Remove bandage, wipe off the ointment and stop all oozing of body fluid with a tissue. Do not wash.
    • If you keep it dry, it will heal faster. Water content of the Tattooed area is a major factor in the speed of healing.
    • Use A&D ointment over the tattooed area.
    • Now, wait for 15 minutes and see if bubbles of fluid appear on the surface of the tattooed area. If they do, wipe off with a tissue and reapply ointment. Continue in this way until no bubbles reappear.
    • Remember not to have any skin contact with people or pets
    • Also, no scratching, picking, peeling of wound
    • No swimming, sauna, Jacuzzi or tub bath
    • No exposure to the sun, don’t use tanning salon
    • Do not play any sport
    • Don’t shave
    • Be very careful at work, keep clean.
    • If you work in a Hospital, take care not to come into contact with patients or anything with your new tattoo. To protect yourself from any accidental contact, bandage your tattoo with a sterile non-stick bandage. After work and before you care for your tattoo, use surgical type hand scrub at home.
    • For best results, begin caring for your new tattoo immediately after you get it.
    • Before you turn in at night, wipe the area down lightly with alcohol so that microorganisms don’t get on the surface of the skin while you sleep.
    • While taking a shower, keep it dry and coat it with Vaseline and wipe it off after a shower.
    • After two days, stop using the A&D ointment and replace it with a moisturizing skin cream or lotion such as Lubriderm.
    • Use Lanolin, though it can cause allergies in some people. Some people recommend using a lotion that contain bee’s wax but that only clogs pores.
    • Continue using moisturizing lotion about five times a day for four or five days.
    • Don’t allow the tattoo to dry out completely, but take care to keep it slightly moist.
